One of my struggles in the summer is managing to get enough
sleep. When the sun is up all day
and shining all night (and particularly when I work all day) I am most inclined
to play way later into the night than is best for my health. When I pack the 5:00pm to 2:00am ‘off’
hours full of hiking, biking, kayaking, running, campfires, s’mores, friends,
and food, the sleep I do manage is sound and vital. Do not be misinformed, I am not complaining, I love every
second of it (except perhaps the first five minutes after the alarm sounds for
work the next morning), I am simply stating a fact in the life of Emily. Another byproduct of this schedule is
failure to share all of the adventures I partake in. This is how my blog died last summer. We will see if I am able to strike a
better balance on take two…
I am working as an intern in the Eider Research department
at the Alaska SeaLife Center. I
love it here! I highly suggest
visiting if you ever have the chance.
Soon (maybe, it depends if it rains) I will make a post about all the
cool things going on here, and more about what my job entails. Right now I am trying to learn as much
as I can while here, and so I volunteer for random things. Once a week for the month of June I
will be on Steller Sea Lion watch from 10pm-2am. Basically I’m looking for behavior between the new mom and
pup (she is so cute!) or copulation between Woody (our mature male) and one of
the other females. It sounds super
interesting, but mostly they just sleep the whole time. Anyway, it will provide me with ample
blogging time so I am hoping to actually make some progress. A magpie recently got through the fence
into the Eider breeding pens and pecked open an egg. This is not good news, and all day the avian husbandry team
had to scare it away. To protect
the eggs, we are all taking shifts through the night to make sure the magpie
does not come back, and that is why this post exists; as I keep sentry I will
also keep myself occupied.
